Father's Day 2011 Cupcakes

It's taking me a while to chase up on posting about my goodies, but i'm trying. Made Some really cute cupcakes for my Dad and Husband for father's day. Loved them!!!! Each was decorated with things that either reminded me of them like #1 Dad and the shirt and tie, or things that I know they like. Which would be beer and BBQing for my Dad and baseball and football for my Husband.

My Influences

My cousins, my sister and myself are the first generation of my family to be be born and raised in the USA. All my Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents and Great-Grandparents etc. were born in the Acores, 9 small islands of Portugal in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Each island with it's own personality. With my mother and her family being from Terceira and my father and his from Sao Jorge I grew up knowing and getting to see two of these beautiful islands. My parents, aunts and uncles had full-time jobs when we were growing up so my Avo; which is portuguese for grandmother; watched my cousins, my sister and I. She in many ways is like a second mother to me and I love her so. My Avo loved to bake portugese sweets and pastries as well as breads, I remember so many times my cousins and I would sit and watch my Avo while she worked her magic in the kitchen. We also got to get in on the action too, playing with dough and trying our hardest to do as Avo did. This is where I first got my taste of baking and where my love for it came. I don't know how to make all the portuguese goodies that my Avo made but I would love to learn. Sadly my Avo is getting old and her memory is fading, I kick myself in the pants for waiting so long and not getting the receipes from her sooner, I'm hoping with help from the family (and the interent) I can recover some receipes of the islands my family calls home. Of course they will never be anything like my Avo's, but the memories of my childhood will be there in every bite. I've dreamed of opening up my own bakery where I can display my cupcakes and cakes that I hope to perfect in time, but to also display the portuguese sweets and goodies that I grew up with. I already have the perfect name "Coracao da Avo," translation: "Grandma's Heart"
